Concert Overview
The Kenan Center for Turkish Cultural Studies proudly sponsored the Boston Meşk Concert, welcoming a full house of New England music lovers to an evening that revived centuries-old Turkish musical traditions in early summer 2025.
About the Boston Meşk Ensemble
Founded in 2022, the Boston Meşk Ensemble is a collective dedicated to preserving Turkish classical and folk repertoire through the oral tradition of meşk. Deep listening, spiritual connection, and teacher-student exchange guide its intergenerational and inclusive structure—building a living bridge between heritage and contemporary expression for diverse audiences across the region.
Concert Program
Structured in two thematic parts—Rast and Hicaz—the program blended instrumental masterpieces (peşrev, saz semâi) with vocal pieces, hymns, and traditional songs (şarkı, türkü) arranged for chorus. Works by Dede Efendi, Hâfız Post, Refik Talat Alpman, and Münir Nurettin Selçuk guided listeners through the technical sophistication and emotive depth of Turkish makam music.
Repertoire Highlights
Two centuries of makam tradition showcased in a single night—linking Ottoman court classics with contemporary choral arrangements.
