This lecture discusses how music is treated in Sâmiha Ayverdi’s works as an element of literary and cultural memory. Ayverdi presents music not merely as an aesthetic field, but also as a language of remembrance, emotional refinement, and spiritual concentration. The session analyzes musical descriptions in selected passages from her novels and essays, showing how the progression of makam, the order of usûl, and performance practices merge with literary narrative. Supported by listening examples, the presentation reveals how Ayverdi positions music among the core values that carry civilization forward.

In addition, the lecture examines, through examples, how music creates continuity in social spaces such as semâî coffeehouses, Ramadan nights, and domestic meşk gatherings. Ayverdi’s approach, which brings music together with both the pleasures of daily life and the depths of the tradition of wisdom, makes the layers of cultural history visible. Within this framework, music is read as both an individual sensitivity and a form of social memory.
